Our proposal won the second prize in Europan 18 ↗ for Trondheim’s new Museum for Art, Decorative Arts and Design. The architecture builds on the surrounding historical cityscape and aligns the museum as the endpoint of the axes leading toward the sea. The museum revitalizes Leüthenhaven Square as a vibrant, green, pedestrian-friendly cultural meeting place, where active ground-floor functions and generous terraces invite everyday use. Sculptural timber architecture, inspired by Trondheim’s maritime context, forms a warm and recognizable public landmark. Inside, visitors encounter a rich sequence of spaces, from luminous underground halls to tall exhibition areas illuminated by roof lanterns. A lush rooftop garden serving the artist residency and a rooftop art restaurant overlooking the fjord crown the experience. The design embraces low-carbon construction, the reuse of existing underground parking structures, and strengthened ecological connections, offering Trondheim a new sustainable cultural heart.
