Karhula School and Library
Open Architecture Competition
Upper Class
Our proposal for the expansion of Karhula School and Library interprets the minimal and rational building heritage of its surroundings. The proposal integrates to the urban space yet includes to it a recognizable novel layer. The architecture opens invitingly to the surrounding urban spaces, and the composition of its masses organize distinctive entrance squares for diverse functions. The library establishes a meaningful and functional end point for the line of sight from the local market square. Interior spaces are defined by experiential lobbies and bright, spacious and appropriate class rooms. The proposal is a statement of modern, flexible wooden architecture, which contributes to the transition to low-carbon construction.
