Hemmesta water tower
Open Architecture Competition
Competition entry
Bridges and tower blocks have already been built of wood in the Nordic countries, but the water tower is a unique and unprecedented typology of wood construction. Our proposal for a water tower forms a playful, sculptural whole. The concept's load-bearing, robust, tectonic wooden beam pedestal creates an illusion of the metal-clad water tank floating on the treetops. The massing leaves a minimal footprint in a forest environment. The serrated upper part of the water tank's façade gives the water tower a strong silhouette and creates a recognisable identity.
